In the well-known song from the musical Les Miserables, I Dream a Dream, Fantine sings
“I had a dream my life would be
So different from this hell I’m living
So different now, from what it seemed
Now life has killed the dream I dreamed”
Fantine describes that the reality of her life looks so much different from that which she dreamed about. I am always left saddend by the song. Fantine descripes how life have dull her “sparkle” untill their was none left
I have asked myself what are the things that steal our “sparkle” and what can we do about them.
Thief number 1: Comparison
We have all heard this saying: Comparison is the thief of joy! Merriam Webster defines comparison as “the consideration or estimate of the similarities or dissimilarities between two things or people.” When we constantly compare ourselves with others and find ourselves lacking in comparison – we are focused on them and their stories that we lose focus on ourselves and our stories – soon we lose ourselves and our uniqueness.
Thief number 2: Negative Thinking
A bad day is a bad day! A mistake is a mistake! Failures happen! This is real life – BUT we must not allow it to cloud our thinking. We are more than our “bad days”, “mistakes” and “failures”. Today is a new day. – Learn from the past – use it to make different choices for your future! You can do it.
Thief number 3: Negative Body Image
You have been created by the Creator as an unique being. To judge yourself harshly, by using false media images is the same as choosing food on the basis of color rather than taste. You are made up of physical as well as the invisible and wonderful characteristics and you spiritual beauty.
Jesus invites us to walk shining our light. John 8:12 “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life”
